Flu claims first victim

A hospital patient died from flu-related symptoms last week in what's the first death from the flue this season, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, reported LETA Thursday.

The deceased patient was over the age of 70 and was in a risk group as a sufferer from one or multiple chronic conditions.

A total 53 persons were diagnosed with influenza last week.

So far this season, 116 people have been hospitalized with influenza.

The number of flu cases registered in the country has been gradually increasing the past weeks, however, it has not reached 100 cases per 100,000 residents in any city to reach the threshold for it being pronounced an epidemic.

Neighboring Estonia has seen the flu claim four lives this season with 147 people hospitalized, reported the country's public broadcaster ERR Thursday.
