Police received a call out to the scene on Hanzas and Strelnieki street at around noon.
According to initial information, a man (born 1987) suddenly had some health problems and lost control of his Volvo vehicle. As a result, he drove onto a sidewalk where a teacher was walking a group of pre-schoolers.
Police informs that the man hit the group of children and then smashed into a building.
The four children hurt in the accident were taken to hospital.
Police officers are still working at the scene to clarify the circumstances of the accident. A test performed on the spot revealed that the driver of the Volvo had a breath-alcohol concentration of 0.16. Under Latvian law, motorists are allowed to drive if their breath-alcohol concentration does not exceed 0.5.
A criminal procedure has been started against the driver who has been sent for further tests after he received medical assistance.
Vita Steina, a representative of Children’s Clinical University Hospital, told LETA that the children are being examined and the first results suggest that none of them has sustained serious injuries.
