Greens set forth Māris Kučinskis as PM candidate

Take note – story published 8 years ago

On Monday the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) supported Saeima member Māris Kučinskis as the party's PM candidate, reported LSM's Latvian-language service.

The move comes as the ZZS board is not content with the lengthy and confusing process of selecting a candidate from the Unity party.

In a press release ZZS said that the previously named candidates have support neither from the society nor the majority of the parliament, so the party board thinks that the process of forming a new government could arrive at a dead end.

Furthermore, a situation like this reduces the already low level of trust in the parliament, the government and the political parties, the announcement said.

MP Kucinskis is a former senior figure in now-defunct People's Party and then the For The Good of Latvia party as its nominee.

Kucinskis was wooed by Unity to join its ranks a couple of years ago but opted for ZZS instead.

The long-serving Unity MP and former MEP Kārlis Šadurskis is seen as one of the most likely potential candidates for the post of prime minister, though after meeting with the president Šadurskis did not answer the question whether Vejonis has offered him the position of the prime minister.

So far the president has addressed Finance Minister Janis Reirs and Valmiera city mayor Janis Baiks, both of whom turned the offer down.
