Harmony party claims security services have been exerting “unprecedented pressure” on its members lately.

Harmony has released a statement to the press informing that the party has expressed its concerns to Prosecutor General Ēriks Kalnmeiers, Constitution Protection Bureau director Jānis Maizītis and State Security Service chief Normunds Mežviets, claiming that the party’s members have become a target of political pressure.

“In recent days, members of Harmony party have been experiencing unprecedented pressure balancing on the verge of persecution,” Harmony says in a letter signed on behalf of the party by Regīna Ločmele-Luņova.

In the letter Harmony also complaints about unmotivated and publicly humiliating luggage checks Daugavpils mayor Andrejs Elksniņš (Harmony) and Riga vice mayor Vadims Baraņņiks had to undergo at Riga Airport. “A respectable and elderly physician, Genādijs Sevastjanovs, was detained based on very questionable motives,” Harmony representatives said.

Harmony members suspect the security services of an “attempt to compromise the political party that for a long time has been receiving the highest voter support in elections and is running Latvia’s largest municipalities”.

As reported, the State Security Service officials conducted searches in the office of Riga City Council city development committee chairman Aleksejs Rosļikovs (Harmony) on Wednesday. The State Security Service officials spent about half an hour and visited only the office of Rosļikovs. The Riga City Council does not have any more information on the situation.

LTV reported that Rosļikovs, accompanied by security officials, left the Riga City Council.

It was also reported that the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) briefly detained Genādijs Sevastjanovs (Harmony), a board member of Riga Hospital No.1 and member of the Riga City Council, in connection with an ongoing probe into the hospital’s procurement deals.
