'Hipster' enters Latvian

Take note – story published 8 years ago

The Latvian State Language Center (VVC) has decided that a hipster will henceforth be called 'hipsteris' in Latvian, according to an announcement at the VVC's website.

The full announcement reads like this:

"The Latvian Language Expert Committee decided on September 9, 2015 about the Latvian-language form for a representative of a youth subculture (protocol No. 44):
hipster – hipsteris."

The -eris ending is reserved mostly for professions and states of being, and is increasingly more popular than the -ers ending, also found in Latvian.
