Attorney Antons Drēbnieks said before the court meeting that the defendant has plead guilty to all accusations. He also claimed the defendant was sexually abused as a child.
The man accused of sexual assaults on underage girls came to court with his face covered and according to those present in the closed-court meeting, he offered his apologies to the victims.
In addition to spending 25 years in jail, the court ruled that the man - according to Latvian Television, an unemployed man living in Jaunjelgava - has to pay compensations of more than €73,000 in total to the victims.
The man believed to be responsible for a string of sex attacks on young girls in and around the Imanta suburb of the Latvian capital, Rīga, was arrested in August 2015 after a year-long manhunt.
Artist's impressions of the suspect appeared throughout the capital so that the 'Imanta paedophile' gained almost mythical status as a symbol of fear and depravity.
