This time influenza has come three to four weeks earlier than usual, Raina Nikiforova, an epidemiologist at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention told Latvian Television Tuesday. This year it is expected to be particularly dangerous to seniors.
Ten municipalities have reported cases influenza to date this year.
The number of influenza cases doubled last week, and furthermore patients experiencing complications have been admitted to hospitals.
Epidemiologists say that an epidemic could erupt within a few weeks.
Nikiforova called for people to vaccinate as this year the seasonal flu shots are very effective.
