Interior Ministry plans potential accommodation for Ukrainian refugees

It is planned to establish centers for the accommodation of potential Ukrainian refugees where people without documents or the possibility of ensuring residence in Latvia could stay, LETA reported February 14.

Interior Minister Marija Golubeva said on Twitter on Saturday that the Ministry had prepared a plan if large numbers of people were to arrive from Ukraine. On Monday, other ministries must submit their comments on the plan.

Interior Minister's advisor to strategic communication, Linda Curika, told LETA that the Ministry was not preparing one large accommodation center but a number of places and cooperation with the private sector. “It is important that people who have no relatives or the possibility of finding immediate accommodation in Latvia should have a place to stay instantly after arrival,” said Curika.

The exact number of potential arrivals could not be predicted at this time. Other ministries are currently examining the plan. Support and cooperation on the part of the Ministry of Economics and Finance is of great importance in order to allow correct calculations for these measures to be carried out. The estimated costs for centres and other potential costs are not yet known.

The execution of the plan will be ensured by the responsible ministries, the institutions subordinate to them, local governments, merchants, as well as non-governmental and other organizations. The plan will have to be approved by the government and then by the Saeima.
