According to Re:Baltica, the money will be used to create a fact-checking platform to combat the spread of fake news and propaganda.
"Our idea is to create a 4facts.org platform where facts are checked at not only professionals, but also by ordinary members of the public. We hope to allow large-scale fact checking in regions with smaller languages, such as Latvia and Estonia," Re:Baltica said.
The money comes from Google's Digital News Initiative (DNI) Innovation Fund which is described as "a partnership between Google and news publishers in Europe to support high-quality journalism through technology and innovation."
Two other projects in Latvia have also received funding: one called Perfect Monitor in the name of Sultan Suleimanov and another called Social Zeitgesit Radar in the name of Renars Liepins.
