Investigative journalists examine ageing population

Take note – story published 6 years ago

The Baltic Center for Investigative Journalism, Re:Baltica, has a new report out considering the likely consequences of Latvia's rapidly ageing population.

Titled "A Country For Old Men" it begins by painting a downbeat picture of schools being transformed into geriatric care homes.

"By 2030, almost half of Latvia’s inhabitants are projected to be over the age of 50 while the number of working people will drop by one fifth," author Inga Springe writes.

The report then moves on to consider individual case histories.

However, all is not lost. Future installments in the series of reports promise different scenarios for the future, offering various degrees of hope based on actions that might or might not be taken in the present.
