Latvia adds 2% more babies in 2015

Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, during the first three months of 2016, 5,313 newborns were registered in Latvia – 87 babies or two percent more than during the corresponding period of 2015.

The number of newborn tends to increase already since 2011.

During the first three months of the year, mortality has grown as well. The number of deaths registered comprises 7,848 – 86 persons or 1.1 percent more than in the first quarter of the previous year.

The number of births still does not exceed the number of deaths, thus natural increase in Latvia has been negative already since 1991. During the first three months of 2016, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, Latvia's population decreased by 2,535 persons (in the corresponding period of 2015 – by 2,536).

In the first quarter of this year, 1,626 marriages were registered, and, as compared to the first quarter of the previous year, the indicator has fallen by seven percent or 131 marriages.

On April 1, 2016, Latvia's population was at 1.967 million.
