Latvia stops flights to Sharm el-Sheikh

The Latvian Civil Aviation Agency (CAA) has decided to put an indefinite ban on flights from Latvia to the Egyptian city Sharm el-Sheikh, Māris Gorodcovs, head of the CAA told LSM Friday. At the moment there are 253 tourists stranded in Sharm el-Sheikh.

The closest flights to Sharm el-Sheikh have been rescheduled. The CAA had asked for additional information from EU institutions, after which a meeting was called, in which it was decided to prohibit flying to Sharm el-Sheikh and to instill extra safety measures.

Gorodcovs said that at the moment there are 253 tourists in Sharm el-Sheikh who had planned returning to Latvia in these days, and on Saturday and Sunday next week airBaltic will be organizing two flights to return them to Latvia.

At the moment, there are about 460 tourists from Latvia in Egypt, including 270 in Sharm el-Sheikh and 190 in Hurghada, reported LETA newswire.

As reported, airBaltic suspended flights to Sharm el-Sheikh yesterday following a Russian plane crash on the Sinai peninsula, killing all 224 people on board in what may have been a bomb attack.
