Latvia will switch to compulsory college education by 2020 or earlier, Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis (Unity) said in an interview with Neatkariga Rita Avize newspaper, reported LETA Tuesday.

According to Šadurskis, schoolchildren will be able to go to a high school or a vocational school after grade 9, (aged 15-16 years) instead of dropping out of the educational system if they choose.

"Our goal is to achieve that 50 percent of school graduates go to vocational schools, and the other half to high schools. At the moment, the proportion is 40 to 60," says the minister.

According to Šadurskis, vocational school graduates acquire valuable skills prized on the labor market.

"That is why we wish to increase the number of schoolchildren who enroll at vocational schools after completing the 9th grade," said the minister.
