Last week the Security Police - Latvia's interior police force - detained a Latvian citizen suspected to have participated in the armed conflict in Syria. The person thus become the first person from Latvia to be arrested for participating in the Syrian conflict, reported LETA Monday.

The Security Police said that the criminal process against this person was initially launched in 2015 for illegally participating in armed conflicts but revealed neither the person's identity nor gender.

This summer, the Security Police received information from Turkish authorities, who had detained the person. The person was deported back to Latvia earlier in September and taken into custody by local authorities.

Persons illegally participating in a foreign armed conflict can face up to ten years in prison.

The Security Police are currently investigating three instances of persons from Latvia participating in the Syrian conflict.
