The Latvian version of Wikipedia turns thirteen this year. Activists want it to pass 100,000 articles by 2018 when Latvia turns 100, reported Pieci.lv youth radio Wednesday.

"In 15 years the Latvian Wikipedia has grown very, very much, together with the world's Wikipedia," Līva Brice, a lecturer at the Sociel Sciences Faculty at the University of Latvia, told Pieci.lv.

Brice said that although due to manpower constraints the Latvian version cannot compete with those of larger languages, it is not falling behind in terms of quality.

In 2005, the Latvian Wikipedia had some 1,000 articles. The number has grown to 65,000 now, contributor Edgars Lecis said.

"We would like to reach 100,000 articles until Latvia's centennial, without sacrificing quality. We are on schedule as of now [..]," said Lecis.

The Latvian Wikipedia Marathon opened on 11 March 2015, aiming to expand the Latvian Wikipedia to 100 thousand articles by the centenary of Latvian independence (18 November 2018).
