Latvia's popularity as a destination for illegal arrivals from Vietnam appears undiminished after border guards detained another 16 individuals on August 24-25.

The State Border Guard reported that on August 24-25 border guards in Latvian eastern municipality of Malnava detained Vietnamese citizens -- 14 men and two women, as well as two human traffickers, both Russian citizens.

The border guards, inspecting the border on Monday morning, discovered signs of illegal border crossing. Attracting more border guards and trained dogs, a chase was mounted and eight Vietnamese citizens were caught in a forest, about seven kilometers away from the border.

On Tuesday, eight other Vietnamese nationals and two human traffickers were caught in Saliniki bog, about five kilometers from the state border.

Criminal proceedings have been started for illegal crossing of the national borders and human trafficking.
