During a meeting with Georgian parliamentary officials in Tbilisi today, Member of Parliament (MP) and chairwoman of the Saeima European Affairs Committee Lolita Čigāne said that visa-free travel between the European Union and Georgia must be introduced as soon as possible.

"Georgia is a close friend of Latvia, and Latvia is interested to see closer integration of Georgia into the EU," Čigāne said.

"Latvia's experience on its roads towards EU and NATO memberships shows that internal political cooperation helps to achieve foreign policy goals. Also in Georgia, on its path towards European integration, it is important to achieve a consensus amongst all the sides involved that such reforms are necessary," she said.

During her discussions with Georgian parliamentarians, the MPs thanked the Latvian parliament and the European Affairs Committee for their continued support of Georgia's territorial unity and independence.

"Our country hopes for the EU to work quickly in making the right decisions, based on Georgia's achievements. It is also important for the upcoming elections in Georgia in October to be in accordance to international standards, which is important for the continued development of the country," said Čigāne .

She also confirmed that even though there are many issues and challenges on the EU's agenda at the moment, including the migration crisis and the upcoming British referendum on whether or not to remain the EU, the Eastern Partnership initiative remains clearly on Latvia's agenda, especially taking into account Russia's interests in influencing its neighbors through soft-power tactics.
