NATO fighters escort another Russian spy plane

The Baltic Air Police (BAP) scrambled some of its Typhoon jets Friday to head off another Russian air force IL-20 Ilyushin reconnaissance plane, or 'coot' in NATO jargon, the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) announced in its Twitter feed.

This brings the count to three air intercepts so far this year after an almost month-long break in what had become regular buzzings by Russian military aircraft off the edges of Latvia's airspace over the Baltic Sea, yet remaining formally within internationally corridors.

Last week Russia's Ambassador to Latvia downplayed the significance of the flights near the border, defending their legality and routine nature in the supplying of Kaliningrad.
