No more curfew at weekends in Latvia

The government has decided not to continue with a curfew regime on Friday and Saturday nights, Health Minister Daniels Pavļuts told Latvian Television February 11.

The curfew was introduced as a safety measure over the New Year's holidays and then continued over subsequent weekends to restrict social gatherings. It was in effect on Fridays and Saturdays from 22:00 to 5:00.

In total, 79,594 persons have been checked since the first curfew and 7,980 administrative infringement proceedings have been initiated, according to information prepared by the police for the government.

Police Chief Normunds Krapsis, said that the curfew should be stopped by shifting police forces to control duties during the day and in the evening hours. In addition, Covid-19 has also affected police officers – currently 92 workers are sick and 93 are isolating as contacts.
