Raivis Dzintars, leader of the National Alliance (NA), said that the cooperation meeting agreed that a special aid of EUR 500 will be paid to families on a per child basis. NA previously called for this benefit to be introduced.
Economics Minister Jānis Vitenbergs (KPV LV) also said that the proposal would be supported because families with children constitute “the most economically active part of society that feels the biggest losses in the crisis”. The proposal is scheduled to be decided upon formally at the government meeting on Tuesday, February 16.
LETA reported that, according to the Ministry of Finance, a one-off allowance of €500 for each child will cost €179 million to the budget. This calculation is based on statistical data showing that there are currently around 358,000 minors in the country, which has a total population of 1.9 million. More accurate calculations will be provided by the Ministry of Welfare (LM).
