Nearly 13,000 Ukrainian civilians have received visas or residence permits to stay in Latvia for a longer period, according to the information by the Ministry of Interior on April 12.

A total of 10,641 long-term visas and 2,279 residence permits have been issued to Ukrainian civilians by April 6.

8,722 persons have already received support for accommodation.

The rules supported Tuesday provide that nearly half of Ukrainian war refugees arriving in Latvia would be housed in seven Latvian biggest cities.

In case 30,000 Ukrainian refugees arrive in Latvia, a total of 14,876 people should be housed in seven cities, more than 7,000 of whom in Rīga. On the other hand, if 35,000 or 40,000 Ukrainian refugees arrived in Latvia, the cities will have to accommodate 17,356 and 19,834 people respectively, according to the regulation prepared by the ministry. The seven cities in question are Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Ogre, Rēzekne, Rīga, Valmiera and Ventspils.

So far, not all municipalities have been jointly involved in receiving Ukrainian civilians. Therefore, the number of Ukrainian civilians to be housed in municipalities is allocated proportionally to the number of inhabitants declared in municipal administrative areas on March 1, 2022.

“The flow of Ukrainian civilians who enter the Republic of Latvia in fleeing the war caused by the Russian Federation in Ukraine is unpredictable. Conditions must be created to minimize the suffering of these people, as well as to provide primary support - accommodation,” said the Interior Ministry.
