Player disqualified for cheating at European Youth Chess Championship

A player has been disqualified for cheating at the European Youth Chess Championship, currently taking place in Riga.

The incident took place during the tournament’s seventh round on Monday when a cellphone was found in one the toilets designated for the players. The presence and use of such devices at the championship is forbidden.

The owner of the cellphone was established and explanations were received after he finished his game.

The tournament’s chief arbiter gave the player loss in the seventh-round game and kicked him out of the championship. All his results have been annulled. His opponents’ results still count.

The European Youth Chess Championship, which is taking place at the Kipsala exhibition center in Riga, is ending on Wednesday.
