Poland starts drilling oil in Baltic sea

Take note – story published 8 years ago

The Lotos Petrobaltic company has started drilling oil at the B8 offshore oil field approximately 70km north of Jastarnia. The B8 field is estimated to contain 3.5 million tonnes of crude oil reserves. Though Latvia lags behind, there are searches for oil in the Baltic country too.

According to Pavel Olekhnovich, the head of the shareholder company Lotos, about 5,000 barrels are to be extracted from the field daily, reported Radio Polsha. Olekhnovich said that it's "another substantive step for strengthening the energetic safety of Poland."

Latvia has sought for oil both on land and sea. For example, Balin Energy company was looking for oil by the coast of Liepāja.

However, the company announced after a test drill that there are no oil reserves in this region of the Baltic sea.

The Canadian Ginguro Exploration company, headed by Andris Bite of Latvian descent, is also interested in Latvia's natural resources.

The company signed an intention protocol with the Ministry of Economics about possible exploration of natural resources in Latvia. The company also closed a deal with the State Environmental Service, allowing it to access Soviet-era research about the geology of Latvia.
