Thursday morning the police defused a hostage situation in the Riga suburb of Plavnieki, involving three children, reported LETA newswire.

State Police spokesman Toms Sadovskis said that a father barricaded himself into an apartment with his three children, threatening to harm them. Police were able to defuse the situation and detain the man at around 9 a.m. this morning.

According to LETA, the incident took place in a social housing apartment building.

Police and Emergency Services were called to the building early in the morning after receiving information that a woman had been assaulted.

Arriving at the scene, the police determined that the woman was assaulted by her 32-year-old partner, who had barricaded himself in the apartment by the time police arrived.

The man was uncooperative when police ordered him to let them into the apartment.

An Omega special police unit was called to the scene and entered the apartment through its windows. The man was arrested and the children rescued.

Criminal proceedings have been started.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness told LETA that there have been incidents in the past in the 10th floor apartment, but had never escalated as far as it did this morning.

The neighbor said that she woke up at around 3 a.m. when another neighbor was banging at her door to call the police.

She could not say the reason the conflict broke out, and also could not say whether the father regularly used alcohol or drugs.
