Presidents' oaths of office show up on eBay

Take note – story published 9 years ago

In a depressing display of the theory that everything has its price, what appears to be a historic document dating from the early years of Latvia's independence has appeared for sale on online auction site eBay.

The item claims to be a genuine "Latvian presidents' oath of office folio 1925 - 1930 signed" and has a price tag of $77,000 with bids invited from $30,000 upwards.

"Pre 1937 Latvian President's oath of office folio includes swearing-in of Janis Cakste, Gustavs Zemgals and Alberts Kviesis. Each oath is signed by the President and dated. Most likely this is the only existing copy. Authentication of documents would be permitted," the accompanying information reads.

Cakste, Zemgals and Kviesis were the first three Presidents of Latvia after independence was won in 1918.

"Other payment methods than paypal would be considered.
Return would be accepted if upon authentication the folio is not authentic," it says. Free shipping is included.

The seller, 'itaska90' is located in Sarasota, Florida, USA.

Numerous pictures accompanying the invitation to get bids rolling from $30,000 are impressive, showing a lavishly-produced document with the words of the Presidential oath rendered in beautiful Gothic script with elaborate illuminated borders.

The seller appears to be a rare book dealer, offering numerous first edition titles, albeit at considerably lower prices.

Asked by LSM how the document came into his or her possession, the anonymous seller declined to give details, simply repeating that the buyers would have a right to refund if it proved inauthentic.
