Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) told the LNT television channel today that the first refugees to Latvia could arrive in January as according to plan, reported LETA news agency Wednesday.

It was previously reported that the first refugees under the relocation plan would arrive in Latvia sometime this winter, however, a specific month was not mentioned until now.

As reported, the government on November 3 finally approved the fine-tuned Refugee Accommodation Plan meant to upgrade the existing system for hosting migrants, and their 'socioeconomic integration into Latvian society.

Latvia has agreed to accommodate 531 refugees that will be relocated from Italy and Greece.

Latvia is also seeing an influx of asylum seekers crossing into Latvia from its eastern borders - 317 persons have requested asylum in Latvia this year, reported LETA Wednesday. Only 24 have been granted an official status of either a refugee or alternative status.

Most asylum seekers in Latvia so far come from Iraq, Vietnam, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Georgia.
