The issue of Covid-19 restrictions is scheduled to be discussed at Tuesday's government meeting, while ministers listen to expert information on the epidemiological situation in the country.
In Latvia the incidence of Covid-19 continues to grow and the situation is “unstable and dangerous”, the Prime Minister said, noting that he does not currently see the basis for significant changes in the safety measures and restrictions imposed to curb Covid-19 in Latvia.
According to the Prime Minister, this makes the opening of outdoor restaurant terraces, which the Minister for Economics, Jānis Vitenbergs (National Alliance) hopes to achieve, an unlikely option. Restaurants and cafes have extensively campaigned for the opening of outdoor terraces as a means of getting back to work.
"I do not see at this time how, in such circumstances while morbidity grows, we could take decisions that would encourage more people to gather, because it is the gathering of people that is the most dangerous thing we can do now. The virus is contagious and still dangerous.
"So I do not expect us to take further steps tomorrow [to reduce restrictions], because the morbidity rates are not appropriate," said Kariņš.
