Refugee plan costs cut by €0.5 million

The 531 asylum seekers Latvia is to host in the coming two years will cost EUR 14.9 million, with EUR 8.4 million to come from the national budget, LETA reported the updated figures Tuesday.

Initially, the total amount was 15.4 million euro; it has been slashed by 459,415 euro.

The Interior Ministry will require the most money EUR 9.8 million, with EUR 7 million going to remodel the reception center at "Mucenieki".

To set up the Latvian language courses for both children and adults, the Education Ministry will need EUR 1.3 million.

To delegate social workers and individual consultants to the refugees, and to tackle matters concerning potential employment, the Welfare Ministry has requested EUR 2.4 million.

The justice, culture and health ministries have all asked for lesser amounts for various purposes, like hiring interpreters for a certain period at "Mucenieki" and launching an introductory welcome program (Ministry of Culture, EUR 855,000).

On October 27, the ruling coalition agreed to halve refugee benefits.
