Humanitarian aid worth €110,000 sent from the Latvian capital has been delivered to Ukraine, Riga city council reported Tuesday.

The Latvian branch of the International Red Cross confirmed to municipal authorities that the aid shipment had been sent to Kyiv for distribution in the east of the conflict-wracked country.

In late August the Riga City Council granted €110,000 to assist people in eastern Ukraine with supplies including Latvian produced medicines and other goods sent by the pharmaceutical company Grindeks as well as clothing, shoes, blankets and other materials.

A second shipment of primarily medical supplies will be sent with shipping costs covered by Riga city council.

"Thanks to the Riga City Council initiative, many Latvian citizens, businesses and non-governmental organizations have been able to make donations," Latvian Red Cross secretary general Uldis Likops said.

"Donations are still ongoing and we express our gratitude to all who in any form have provided and continue to provide support to the affected population in the war zone," Likops said.
