Riga Circus gets new head

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Ināra Kehre, the former head of the Viegli fund for poet Imants Ziedonis, will be the new director of the Rīga Circus, said the Culture Ministry on March 16.

She was one of the six people who applied for the post.

The term of previous director Lolita Lipinska ran out on December 31, 2016. Dace Vilsone of the Culture Ministry had acted in her stead until now.

The Latvian government has supported banning the use of wild animals, effective July 1, 2017; however the law still has to go through the Saeima. Riga Circus will have to stop using wild animals in performances from 2018.

As the new director, Kehre will not only have to work out a new business model for the circus, but also oversee the repairs of the crumbling old circus building in central Rīga.
