Russian 'coot' spotted again in Baltic skies

Take note – story published 9 years ago

The Baltic Air Police (BAP) tallied another scramble Thursday evening, as jet pilots took off from Lithuania's Siauliai airbase in to see who was straying close to Latvian airspace over the Baltic Sea. It turned out to be another Russian 'coot', reported the National Armed Forces (NBS) on their Twitter feed.

The Ilyushin IL-20 military reconnaissance aircraft was identified in international airspace close to Latvia's maritime jurisdiction again after several sightings and interceptions already this year, including two in January and February, and one at the start of March.

'Coot' is the term given by NATO to the Russian spy plane of this type.
