The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) searched for a man missing in the Gauja river since Wednesday, VUGD representative Ilze Dāme-Birziņa told Latvian Television on June 25.

On Wednesday, June 22, evening, VUGD received a call to Cēsis, Gaujas Street, where two people had gone swimming and one of them went missing. The service carried out underwater search jobs but failed to find the missing man.

On the morning of Saturday, June 25, it was reported that efforts to find the man in Gauja had ended without results and search jobs were suspended. The search for the missing man resumed again at 11:30 Saturday.

After a lengthy search, a body was eventually recovered from the water on Sunday by the State Fire and Rescue Service.

VUGD recalls that it is mandatory to wear a life vest on a boat, raft, or other watercraft. If you get caught in the stream when you swim, keep calm and swim forward, trying to get closer to the shore.
