Several hundred protest against COVID-19 restrictions in Rīga

A gathering of around 300 people demonstrated against current epidemiological and social restrictions in Rīga on Saturday, December 12, a figure far in excess of the maximum 25 currently allowed to gather for such purposes.

Some attendees at the gathering near Rīga castle wore face masks, but most did not, according to estimates by Latvian Radio and the LETA news agency.

A later meeting near the Freedom Monument also attracted more than 100 participants, Latvian Radio reported, and said not enough was being done by government to support businesses affected by the coronacrisis and stimulate the economy.

Police said several arrests had been made, but that they had not intervened to disperse the meetings after assessing the situation and making a decision based on the need for public order and a desire not to escalate the situation.
