Some fire stations could close temporarily due to staff shortages

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) plans to temporarily close the less-congested stations due to critical personnel shortages, Latvian Radio reported October 19.

VUGD has announced that more clarifications will be made on October 20.

Meanwhile, the Firefighters' union is raising alarm and calling on citizens to sign on the initiative on Manabalss.lv. The closure of the stations means that the society will be at risk, said union board member Rolands Miloševskis.

“The most important thing is human life. And the collection of signatures is very simple. If union members say a station will be closed, it means there would be no firefighters in that town for a given moment. It won't be a long time. Maybe for one day or maybe for one or two weeks. And it's all because of money. Of course, because of the lack of staff. If the State Fire and Rescue Service lacks the money to repay workers' overtime, these negotiations with the government have been unsuccessful, then the union has to be involved,” Miloševskis said.
