State of emergency planned to be extended until April 6 in Latvia

Latvia plans to extend the state of emergency due to Covid-19 until April 6, the government conceptually agreed on Tuesday, February 2.

So far, the state of emergency was set until February 7.

According to the Health Ministry, the current safety measures should remain until the 14-day cumulative incidence rate of Covid-19 per 100 000 inhabitants drops below 200 cases a day. This is an indicator which both Latvian and European epidemiologists consider appropriate to ease epidemiological safety measures.

At the same time, the Health Ministry considers that the assessment of the epidemiological situation in the country should be carried out every three weeks in order to identify the effects of the restrictions and to decide on any changes.

The Economics Ministry's proposal to allow more retail activity was also conceptually approved.

The government also conceptually decided to ban travel to and from the United Kingdom,  Ireland and Portugal, as well as to limit unnecessary trips abroad.

The exact decisions will be taken by the government on Thursday.
