In fall Rīga's real estate market sees a surge in demand as students return to their studies, reported Latvian Radio Tuesday.

Young people are usually looking for apartments in central Rīga or by the Dzirciema st. It's mostly foreign students that look for rent apartments while locals usually opt for dormitories.

Aigars Zariņš of the Balsts real estate company says that in August the demand for rent apartments in Rīga has increased 22%, especially in the €250-300 price category.

"Rent apartments are in high demand especially around the Dzirciema st. by the Rīga Stradiņš University, and students are looking for a place to live close to the study institution. However the supply is not growing and no new projects or rental apartment complexes are being developed in Rīga," said Zariņš.

While Liene Spilva Ekerte, a representative of the student body of Rīga Stradiņš University says that the high demand for rental apartments in autumn is mostly due to foreign students.

Dormitories are already full by September each year, and in some dormitories the number of foreign students is just 10%, she said.
