The number of students enrolled at Latvia's higher education universities and colleges is falling at an alarming rate, according to official data released Wednesday.

According to the Central Statistics Bureau, in the academic year 2014/2015 there were 29,200 students enrolled to begin studies in 60 higher education institutions - fewer by 6.6% than in the previous academic year 2013/2014.

More than a half of enrolled students (56.1%) study using their personal means, but 43.9% using state and local government grants.

55.8% of newly-enolled students enrolled are female.

In total in the academic year 2014/2015 85,900 students are studying in higher education institutions, which is 4.3% lower than in the previous academic year. 59.6% of them are female, suggesting men tend to drop out of studies more readily than women.

One area of growth was in students returning from study overseas. 5,285 students, who have acquired previous education abroad (including non-Latvians), are continuing their studies in higher education institutions of Latvia. That is an impressive 18% more than in the previous academic year.

In 2014 17,400 students completed their higher education - a figure that is 19.5% lower than in 2013.
