The picketers also objected against the recent decision of the Constitutional Court to grant rights to parental leave after childbirth to same-sex families.
The protesters consider that the male and female union and the offspring resulting from this union, both biological and adopted, should be regarded as a natural family. Families where children are raised by one parent and other blood relatives, should also be considered as natural.
“It is very important for us to defend and support family status, which is a man and a woman, ideally a husband and wife,” said the picketer Atis, whose surname was not given.
While most of those attending seemed to be fairly traditional in appearance, one protester even went to the length of donning what appeared to be an ersatz tribute to 1930s paramilitary groups complete with armband, Alpine-style forage cap and a flag with a rotate-central-image-four-times-around-central axis design, giving him the appearance of an extra in a World War Two-set production of Richard III.
Picketers also call for amendments to the Constitution, supplementing it with a clear and unambiguous definition of a natural or traditional family.
