Tax service chief found dead

Ilze Cirule, the head of Latvia's tax service, the State Revenue Service (VID) was found dead at home March 10, the LETA news agency reported.

Ieva Sietniece, Senior Specialist of the State Police in the Zemgale Region Administration, told LETA that Cirule was found dead at her place of residence without any apparent signs of violent death. Forensic medical expertise is attempting to determining the cause of death.

Cirule was aged 54 and had served as the chief of the Revenue Service since 2016. She is credited with bringing some degree of order to an institution with a low rating in the eyes of the public and a string of scandals behind it.

Before that she worked in the insurance sector.

Officials including Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis expressed condolences to Cirule's family and friends.
