In Talsi municipality, a teenager has died while sledding on a sack attached to a car, Madara Šeršņova, representative of State Police (VP), told Latvian Radio January 15.

On Thursday, the police received information from the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) about the death of a 14-year-old girl in Virbu parish in a road accident.

According to Šeršņeva, a 19-year-old man was driving a car with a large sack containing a mattress and tire tubes attached to the back. Two young people were sledding on this construction. The car taking a turn, the bag slid off the road and slipped into a ditch.

One of the sledders, a 14-year-old girl, was thrown on a drainpipe in the ditch, sustaining fatal injuries. The medics fought for the girl's life but failed to resuscitate her. The girl died at the scene.

The driver behind the wheel was sober and had a driver's license.

Šeršņova said that VP had initiated criminal proceedings for the violation of road traffic rules resulting in the death of a person.

Under criminal law, such an offense shall be punished by imprisonment of up to eight years, and prohibition to drive a vehicle for a period of up to five years.

Many people publish videos enjoying themselves similarly, ignoring the fact that such activities are dangerous not only to themselves but to any other road user, the police spokeswoman said.

Šeršņeva said that there was no argument in favor of such entertainment.  This tragic accident shows that such activity could end with serious consequences even without collision with another vehicle.
