Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is one of Europe's most experienced and respected statesmen. At the opening of a two-day conference dedicated to the Baltic Way in Riga on August 21, he sent this video message to delegates.
As well as reflecting on the past, Bildt urged all to think of the implications of such actions in the modern world - particularly in Ukraine.
"It's important to learn some of the lessons of the Baltic Way: stand by principle, stand by truth, be determined and look forward... that is what will be decisive now as well as then," he said.
