Thousands of young people spend a day in the shadows

Wednesday is "ēnu diena" or "Shadow day" in Latvia, when thousands of schoolchildren and students spend a day "shadowing" people in business, public administration and all other walks of life to gain work experience and a better understanding of what makes the country tick.

The hope is that by introducing students to the various professions and career fields it will help them decide where their own futures might lie.

A large contingent of 50 students were based among the operations of airline airBaltic (main picture).

Meanwhile in Liepaja shadows were in place with police, armed forces and the local university.

Meanwhile the Interior Ministry hosted another sizable selection of students:

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics limbered up for another day of diplomacy by having  roundtable discussion with his four shadows:

Over at the Finance Ministry, shadows were on hand to double-check officials had done their calculations properly:

State police chief Ints Kuzis took the opportunity to show off his trophy cabinet:

Some new voices were heard in the cabinet debating chamber:

And one big fan of singer Dons got a pleasant surprise during her day as a shadow:
