The Chief of State Police has taken a decision to suspend three police officials from the performance of duties in connection with their activity on May 10 in ensuring public order by the 'Victory' monument, State Police said May 13.

Three officials of the State Police Riga Regional Administration have been suspended - executor of duties of the precinct chief, Commander of a patrol police battalion, as well as one inspector. Police said the suspended were those responsible officials who made on-site decisions in relation to the events of that particular day.

"A service inspection has so far found that the situation was not properly assessed on the part of these police officers and that the tactics for dealing with it had not been correctly chosen. The action had to be immediate and unequivocal, an exact signal to the unsanctioned gathering that any acts of hatred, war-supporting and other similar acts of law would not be tolerated," said the police statement to the media.

The police indicated that, assessing the situation as a whole, officials from both the State Police and the municipal police did not perform their duties properly so that violations of law are prevented immediately.

The examination of the service continues, and other officials could also face disciplinary measures.
