True love waits as COVID-19 reduces number of marriages in Latvia

Data released by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) May 20 show that in March and April 2020, 1,020 marriages were registered – 344 or 25.2 % less than in the respective two months of 2019.

On average 17 marriages were registered daily during these two months (22 marriages in 2019).

"The drop in the number of marriages registered was affected by the implementation of the emergency situation in Latvia due to the Covid-19 pandemic," the CSB said.

Number of births, deaths and marriages in April 2020

In April 2020, the number of registered births (1,525) was 2.1 % less than in the respective month of the previous year. More encouragingly, the number of deaths in April comprised 2,311 which is 5.6 % less than in April a year ago.

In April of this year there were 786 more deaths than births.

In April, 482 marriages were registered, which is 161 marriages fewer than in the respective month of the previous year.

On 1 May 2020, the provisional population of Latvia stood at 1,903,500.
