Two people died in a fire in a small Rīga garden house on Sunday, January 19, according to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) on January 20.

Firefighters were called to a fire at 8:18 p.m. after people noticed flames in the distance near a forest. It was established that a 25 square meter garden house was on fire, and after putting out the fire, the firefighters found two persons had died at 10:52 p.m.

Garden houses are small buildings or just shacks primarily intended for summer use, but some people stay in tem or shelter in them during the winter months too.

Last weekend VUGD was called 72 times – 32 times to put out fires, 18 times for rescue operations and 22 were false alarms.
