Warning over fake info email about Ukrainian refugees

The Department of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) has issued a warning about a fake request for information about Ukrainian refugees in Latvia.

"We warn you that a false request for information about Ukrainian refugees is being distributed from a fake e-mail domain [pretending to be from PMLP]. E-mails are sent from the fake address '[email protected]'," said the PMLP.

The fake e-mail reads: "In accordance with Latvian-Ukraine bilateral agreements, PMLP conducts activities to search for male refugees from Ukraine. If you have information about refugees who have arrived in your area from Ukraine, please fill out the appropriate form and send to the department's e-mail. Your help facilitates the return of conscripts to Ukraine to perform military duty."

The email is completely false in all respects and the PMLP is calling on the public and media alike not to give any credence to it, nor to respond to it.

The warning was later repeated by Latvia's dedicated cyber-security agency, CERT.lv, which said anyone encountering the message should delete it.
