Take note – story published 4 years ago

A man was killed in Babite County this past weekend after handling an unexploded shell from WWII, State Police spokeswoman Gita Gzibovska told LETA.

According to police information, the middle-aged man was attempting to defuse the shell in his shack when it went off, killing the man.

Police also inform that there were other unexploded munitions from WWII in the shack at the time, which all have since been neutralized.

According to police, the man was a so-called ''black archaeologist'', who searches for and collects wartime munitions.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Artis Pabriks said on Twitter that unfortunately, both world wars have not only left a tragic mark on the Latvian people, but also to its land, and that ''black archaeology'' activities in Latvia are still relatively popular by enthusiasts.
