Latvia saw warmest September in 100 years

Last month's average air temperature in Latvia was +16.1 degrees, beating the record for the warmest September in 2023 by three-tenths of a degree.

According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVGMC), the previous record was +15.2 degrees in September 1934. Data on the average air temperature in Latvia have been collected since 1924.

Last month, the highest air temperature was +30.0 degrees on September 4 in Bauska, while the lowest temperature in the LVGMC observation network was -1.3 degrees on the morning of September 30 in Zosēni.

Air temperatures remained above normal throughout the month, except for the last two days of September, with the second decade of the month being even 4.7 degrees warmer than usual. September was 3.8 degrees warmer than normal overall.

Average rainfall in September was 51.9 millimeters or 85% of the long-term average. The highest rainfall was recorded in Vičaki, Ventspils municipality, where 108.5 millimeters fell, while Dagda and Piedruja had only 13 millimeters last month.

The strongest wind gusts - 29.3 meters per second - were recorded during thunderstorms on the evening of September 27 in the port of Liepāja.
