Wind tears through Latvia Friday, Saturday

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) had responded to 131 calls related to the consequences of strong winds until 8:30 on Saturday morning.

The highest number of calls was registered in Vidzeme, followed by Riga region, Rīga City, Zemgale, Latgale, and Kurzeme.

Most of the trees had fallen on the road, for example, in Priekuli parish, Cēsis municipality, several trees had fallen on a small stretch of road. In several places, trees fell on power lines. Eight residential buildings in Riga had their structures blown away by the wind, as of Friday evening and one building in Riga had an advertising board ripped off.

On Saturday, November 2, morning, power supply is disrupted for about 4,000 clients of the electricity distribution network, mostly in Vidzeme, Saulkrasti and Limbaži municipalities.

Electricity operator "Sadales tīklis" invites residents to report unrecorded damages and infrastructure defects observed in nature on its website, in the section "Report damage".

A yellow alert issued by the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology is in force throughout the country until Saturday afternoon, while an orange warning for northwest wind gusts of up to 25-29 meters per second is in force on the coast, including Riga.
