First 'tropical' night of the year recorded; Friday will be even hotter

Last night the air temperature remained above 20 degrees in some places on the coast of the Gulf of Riga, making it the first tropical night, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

The air temperature was 21.6 C in central Riga, 21.2 C in Daugavgrīva and 20.2 C in Mērsrags.

According to the classification established by the World Meteorological Organisation, nights when the air temperature remains above 20 degrees are tropical nights. Last century, such nights were very rare in Latvia - only in a few places in the country about once a decade - but this century, tropical nights occur almost every summer.

Friday will be the hottest day of the week, according to forecasts.

The day will be sunny, but towards evening, storm clouds will form in Kurzeme, bringing temporary, locally heavy rain, with hail and strong wind gusts also possible.

The day will see moderate southeastern winds prevailing, with gusts of 10-13 meters per second in Kurzeme, but they can be much stronger during the storm.

Maximum air temperature of +30 C to +33 C, on the coast +26 C to +29 C.

Riga will also have a sunny day with a maximum air temperature of +32 to +33 C.

A heat alert will still be in place across the country on Friday.
